The premier says plans are already in the works for a public holiday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has flagged the idea of a public holiday should they win the tournament - though the actual decision will be left up to the states.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns supports the idea, and has even put forward the idea of a "ticker tape parade" through the CBD.

Despite political enthusiasm for the idea and the vast following the Matildas have accumulated during their run through the tournament, some opposition to the idea of a public holiday has come from the business sector, who claim they can't afford the expense.Minns, however, said a major celebration could trigger an "economic explosion" for the Sydney CBD.

"If we did do it in Sydney for a big public holiday, and a massive ticker tape parade, can you imagine the kind of energy and economic excitement," he said. The state government is currently talking with Football Australia about the best date for a potential celebration, taking into account the Matildas' players ongoing commitments.
