Alex de Minaur achieved a significant milestone at the Australian Open, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old Australian secured a convincing 6-0 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over rising American Alex Michelsen on Monday night, setting up a high-profile clash with world No.1 Jannik Sinner on Wednesday. De Minaur expressed his elation at finally breaking through in Melbourne, stating, 'It means the world.
There's nothing I want to do more than play well in Australia. I'm super happy to finally break through, finally get that milestone moment here at the Australian Open.' This victory marked several career milestones for de Minaur. He became the first Australian man to reach the quarter-finals since Nick Kyrgios in 2015 and the first to make four consecutive grand slam quarter-finals since Lleyton Hewitt's run to the 2005 Australian Open final. However, de Minaur faces a formidable challenge against the defending champion Sinner, whom he has yet to defeat in nine previous encounters. Despite the daunting task ahead, de Minaur remains optimistic, saying, 'It's going to be an incredibly tough match and I'm going to have to do something I haven't done before. But why not start here?' The first set saw de Minaur dominate, completely outclassing Michelsen. However, Michelsen, who had previously upset world No.11 Stefanos Tsitsipas and 19th seed Karen Khachanov, fought back in the second set, pushing de Minaur to a tie-break. De Minaur ultimately secured the second set, and then comfortably won the third set to complete the victory. Reflecting on the match, de Minaur acknowledged that he had missed opportunities to win more convincingly, stating, 'I had my opportunities in the second set to maybe run away with that one as well and not let him inside of the match but I wasn't able to close out. He obviously raised his level and made it a tough match ... the second set was pivotal.
