Three weeks after a 16-tonne whale washed up on a beach on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, the animal's carcass is finally being removed.
The body of a 16-tonne fin whale washed up on 13th Beach, on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, on September 13.
Believed to be a fin whale, the second largest species of whale, the 14-metre carcass drifted on to the beach near Barwon Heads Bluff on September 13. Ms Quinney said the ongoing presence of the whale had been a huge concern for the community, including surf schools, tour groups and lifesaving clubs that could not operate."I just think it's just such a great outcome – a great outcome for the community, a great outcome for the businesses that potentially could have lost a lot of money from people not coming to the region because the beaches are closed, a great outcome for the clubs," she said.
"And to heighten the risk, because of the active shark alert for Ocean Grove, there's no life savers."He said he would put his money on it being a sevengill shark, but it was difficult to tell as he was wearing booties.Marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta, of Macquarie University, said animals would still likely be feeding off pieces of the animal that have come off the main carcass.
