Three people have developed symptoms of a rare but life-threatening paralysing illness after suspected fake botox injections at a Sydney home, prompting health authorities to warn against anti-wrinkle injections from unauthorised practitioners.

Rarer still are cases linked to botox, a drug made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which produces the neurotoxin. “Cosmetic injections, if used incorrectly, could result in serious harm and even death in the most serious of cases,” McAnulty said.“Botulism, although rare, can be fatal, which is why it is so important that anyone receiving cosmetic injections does so under the supervision of an appropriately registered health practitioner,” he said.
