At least ten people have been killed in a horrific school shooting in the Swedish city of Orebro , marking it as the deadliest mass shooting in the nation's history. Police confirmed the tragedy, stating that the gunman was believed to be among the victims and acted alone. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The shooting unfolded shortly before 1 pm local time on Tuesday at Campus Risbergska, a sprawling campus housing multiple schools for both children and adults, located 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. Panicked students were forced to seek refuge under their desks and flee the school for their safety as the gunman wreaked havoc. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, addressing a press conference, condemned the attack as 'brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people.' Local police chief Roberto Eid Forest, speaking to reporters at the scene, confirmed the grim toll of at least ten fatalities. He explained that the exact number was difficult to ascertain due to the scale of the incident. Maria Pegado, a 54-year-old teacher at the school, recounted the terrifying experience. She described how someone burst into her classroom, shouting for everyone to evacuate immediately after the lunch break. Pegado, along with her 15 students, raced into the hallway, only to hear two gunshots as they escaped. Another student, sharing their account with Expressen newspaper, described hearing three loud bangs and panicked screams before taking shelter in a classroom. They remained there, waiting to be evacuated. The school caters to students aged 20 and above, offering a range of programs, including primary and upper secondary school courses, Swedish classes for immigrants, vocational training, and programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. While Sweden has been grappling with a surge in shootings and bombings linked to gang crime, fatal attacks at schools remain relatively rare. Official records from the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention indicate that ten people were killed in seven incidents of school violence between 2010 and 2022. One particularly infamous case from the past decade involved a 21-year-old masked assailant driven by racist motives who killed a teaching assistant and a boy, while injuring two others in 2015.
