After the Fox-Disney merger in 2017, many questions were raised over the characters from the X-Men franchise, specifically when they would begin appearing in the MCU.
Deadpool 3 is in a unique position, in that it is a continuation of the prior two Deadpool films while simultaneously being the character's first MCU appearance. The film will see the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, alongside other Marvel multiverse characters and plenty of other returning Deadpool and Deadpool 2 characters.
But maybe not for long. With Deadpool 3's release, the Deadpool trilogy could be in contention to overthrow Captain America should the film be as well-received as its potential - and the precedent of the first sequel - suggests. Both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are classed among the best of the X-Men franchise, with the character's meta nature, hilarious comedy, and surprising amount of heart all contributing to the first two films' success.
Deadpool’s Trilogy Is Breaking New Ground For Marvel The interconnected nature of Deadpool 3 and the first two films, despite the former being set in an entirely different universe, means the trilogy is breaking new ground for Marvel Studios. After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, many argued that all three live-action Spider-Man movie series' could now be classed as canon to the MCU.
That said, classifying every single Marvel franchise as canon simply due to the nature of the multiverse is expansive and confusing, to say the least. With Deadpool 3 though, the first two films are being officially classed as canon by Marvel Studios due to the extensive cast of Deadpool 1 & 2 characters appearing in the film and the numerical title dictating it as a sequel to those first two films, albeit in the MCU.
