Australian and world cricket has been left stunned by the sudden death of Hall of Famer Dean Jones
An adventurous Test batsman, one-day pioneer, coach-for-hire and ever lively commentator and columnist, Jones suffered a massive heart attack while on assignment in Mumbai with Star TV. He was 59."It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr Dean Mervyn Jones AM," said Star India in a statement. "He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time.
Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings was, like everyone else, shocked. "Dean was a great Australian cricketer and an outstanding Test batsman who also revolutionised one-day cricket," he said. "Most recently, he has been a much sought-after commentator and coach, known for his forthright views and understanding of the T20 game. He will be sadly missed."Jones - Deano to all - left indelible marks on the sport of cricket and on the people who knew him.
He patented new ways of batting in one-day cricket and was a livewire in the field. He could be provocative. One night at the SCG in 1993, he asked West Indian great Curtly Ambrose to remove his white wrist-bands. Ambrose retorted with a torrid spell of fast bowling, taking 5/32.
