Rescue efforts continue as people in the Kumamoto prefecture prepare for further heavy rains and landslides, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant.

Helicopters and boats have been used as more than 40,000 defence troops, the coast guard and fire brigades continue efforts to rescue people from their homes.Large areas along the Kuma River have been swallowed by floodwaters, with many houses, buildings and vehicles submerged almost up to their roofs.In Hitoyoshi City, the deluge poured into houses near the main train station.
About 200,000 residents in Kumamoto prefecture were urged to evacuate following pounding rains on Friday evening and into Saturday.
