At least 950 people have died following a powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. Details on The Latest with michaelusher on Channel7 tonight. TheLatest 7NEWS

The toll is expected to rise as information trickles in from remote mountain villages.

In this photo released by a set-run news agency Bakhtar, Afghans look at destruction caused by an earthquake in the province of Paktika, eastern Afghanistan. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the tremors were felt by about 119 million people across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The majority of confirmed deaths were in the province of Paktika, where 255 people had been killed and more than 200 injured, said interior ministry official Salahuddin Ayubi.“The death toll is likely to rise as some of the villages are in remote areas in the mountains and it will take some time to collect details,” Ayubi said.

The disaster comes as Afghanistan has been enduring a severe economic crisis since the Taliban took over August, as US-led international forces were withdrawing after two decades of war.
