The Hunter Valley's colonial history looks set to impact its future, with Indigenous groups finding themselves at odds amid a proposed mine expansion.

Among the dense patchwork of open-cut coal mines in the New South Wales Hunter Valley sits a sandstone colonial homestead dating back to the early 1800s.Its history could impact the future of mining in the valley.

Glencore is seeking approval to build a new open-cut pit and mine an additional 135 million tonnes of coal until 2044. Mr Franks declined the ABC's requests for an interview but spoke about the matter in a webinar hosted by NSW Greens MLC David Shoebridge. Wonnarua Nation Aboriginal Corporation chief executive Laurie Perry said there were "tit-for-tat skirmishes" on the land, but "there was no massacre on the site or recorded massacre on the site"."If we did, then we would protect it."

Another group, the Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council, declined to be interviewed, but it was understood the group believed evidence of a massacre on the site was inconclusive.
