Hundreds of thousands of Sydney commuters are being warned to brace for disruptions to the public transport network as rail workers refuse to staff two thirds of the city’s trains amid an ongoing industrial dispute with the NSW government.
Last Tuesday’s rail strike caused delays and some congestion throughout Sydney’s public transport network.While patronage is still close to 50 per cent of pre-COVID levels, about 1.3 million trips are being taken every day across the network, with hundreds of thousands of people likely to be impacted by the action.
The strike comes just one week after similar industrial action by the union caused disruption across the network and crowding on city platforms and trains.Credit:Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said he was disappointed the union was choosing to engage in industrial action as Sydney was reopening and people were reconnecting across the city.
The union wants the government to agree to make a software change to the trains, allowing the guard doors to open when they are approaching and leaving stations. The RTBU is also calling for COVID-19 cleaning hours to be maintained and a job commitment for workers if the service is privatised.
