Defence Minister Richard Marles says US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was a matter both for the United States and for Taiwan as Australia will support the “status quo”.
“What is important to say on behalf of the Australian government is we do not support any unilateral changes to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait,” he told Sky News Australia.
“What that means is that we support the One China policy, which has been supported by every government in this country of both political persuasions since the 1970s.” Mr Marles said the Australian government would be giving a “calm and measured response” to tensions in the area.
