The new fleet of nuclear submarines on order are set to power the nation’s economy and will have huge spin-offs across both defence and industry.

The submarine program announced recently will be quite transformative for the economy and supercharge defence-related jobs like never before, according to Innes Willox, CEO of the Australian Industry Group.

The submarine program will have huge spin-offs across both defence and industry, says Mr Willox. It will also raise the demand for artificial intelligence and quantum technologies., he says. Australia needs to embed people in the US and UK navies and industry sectors and encourage young people to consider submarines as a career choice in order to build both skills and experience.

“Our efforts in developing these cutting-edge capabilities are underpinned by work to promote greater information and technology sharing across the partnership and accelerate our defence innovation enterprises. “We will progress testing and demonstrations of hypersonics and additional autonomous systems in the 2023-24 timeframe and beyond. By advancing trilateral maritime undersea intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance and interoperable undersea autonomous systems, our respective and collective maritime domain awareness will be enhanced.”

Many of those technologies won’t come from traditional suppliers, and the way contractors are selected and projects funded will likely change also.Defence’s industry policy objectives haven’t changed: Defence still aims to foster a strong, resilient, high technology industry base to provide sovereign support for the ADF and eventually become a high-technology pillar of a modernised national economy.

Those facilities will support the nuclear submarines of all three navies – Australia’s will be home-ported in Perth.
