Parents in this island community, which has no child care services, were 'very excited' when an early learning trial for three-year-olds was promised by 2024. Now, with no progress made on delivering that, parents want answers.
In August last year, Bruny Island and four other Tasmania n locations were announced as trial sites for a kindergarten for three-year-olds.
"Because we'd already gone through focus groups and a planning process, we had an indication that it would be happening last year, probably in fourth term."Determined parents battling childcare waiting list stress have gathered crucial data to advocate for solutions ahead of a Productivity Commission report into the sector.
"But I think there's a challenge for a lot of families that in a rural community your kids can can become isolated pretty quickly."One in three Australian grandparents babysit their grandkids to fill in gaps in childcare, becoming a support "village" for working parents, research finds. But what happens if you don't have grandparents to rely on?
"It's really about finding a balance for the mental health of the parents in our community and supporting them and their ability to make an income and a living, while also giving the kids the best opportunity to interact with other kids as well." "We're not asking for anything more than the government to deliver on their promise. They raised this, we got excited about it and we absolutely wanted it."The Tasmanian government committed to provide universal access to pre-school for every Tasmanian child in the year before kindergarten, which in 2023 was 5,800 children.
The statement said the department was working with the Bruny Island District School and the community to provide "expanded early learning programs in 2025".
