President Donald Trump’s tax returns are being presented as a “giant gotcha moment” with suggestions he’s acted illegally which is decidedly false, according to Sky News contributor Daisy Cousens.
An investigation by the New York Times claimed the president paid just US$750 in federal income tax in 2016, and another $750 in 2017. Mr Trump, however, shut down the report as “totally fake news”. Ms Cousens said the whole story is being presented as a “giant gotcha moment” for the president with Democrats consistently calling him a “tax cheater”.
“He’s being presented as having done something illegal,” she said. “There’s a difference between tax evasion – which is illegal – and tax minimisation – which is what we all do. “If people actually read the article and had a basic knowledge of how tax works they would know that one the New York Times actually has not provided the documents to support this scoop which should discredit the whole thing.
