Two Western Australian families are calling for a recall of a popular dog treat brand's prosciutto bone product after their dogs, Tucker and Lido, suffered serious health consequences after consuming it. Both dogs required emergency surgery and intensive care.

Two families from Western Australia are demanding a popular dog treat brand recall one of their products after it landed their dogs in the ICU . Sasha Wadham and Graham Torpy live just 15 minutes apart in Perth, Western Australia, but didn't meet until tragedy struck. Within 48 hours, Wadham's dog Tucker was admitted to ICU at a local animal hospital. Scans revealed 'bone splinters all inside him', which vets suspected were from something he'd eaten. Wadham quickly put two and two together.

She searched Bow Wow Dog Treats on Google and found a string of negative reviews claiming the brand's prosciutto bone product had made dogs ill. \'We are aware of a small number of incidents regarding this product in this last 12 months,' a spokesperson for Bow Wow Dog Treats told 9news.com.au. The Bow Wow Dog Treats spokesperson also confirmed that, following reviews and consultations with industry experts, 'the Prosciutto Bone will be phased out of the market by end Q1 2025 as we explore alternative offerings'. Wadham's dog Tucker required emergency surgery after consuming the treat. \'I still get teary when I think about it,' Wadham told 9news.com.au. Though her sister has pet insurance it won't cover the full amount, so Wadham started an online fundraiser to help cover Tucker's care. His dog Lido had required surgery and a scary ICU stay after eating the same Bow Wow Treats Prosciutto Bone just a few months earlier, in September 2024. Torpy told 9news his beloved dog was 'on death's doorstep' within 72 hours of consuming the treat, which is marketed as safe for adult dogs. 'They had to perform a risky operation ... which they gave him a less than 20 per cent chance of surviving,' he said. \Lido was a happy, healthy dog before eating the Bow Wow Dogs Treats Pork Bone. (Supplied/Graham Torpy) Torpy claimed it was 'identical' to a Bow Wow Treats Proscuitto Bone with the same batch number as the first one he had fed Lido. Lido recovered well after surgery but his vet bill came to $12,000 and Torpy had to dip in to savings he and his fiancée had earmarked for their wedding to pay it. He contacted Bow Wow Treats' parent company Nova Concepts to file a complaint about the treat and was allegedly told Lido's reaction was an 'isolated incident'. Together, they've started a demanding Bow Wow Dog Treats recall the Prosciutto Bone that put Lido and Tucker in hospital, and are calling for stockists like Woolworths, Big W, Coles and Aldi to stop selling the treats. Wadham is devastated that the treats weren't pulled from shelves months ago, when Torpy first brought Lido's case to the brand's attention. The Bow Wow Dog Treats Prosciutto Bone retails for about $8. (Bow Wow Dog Treats) Bow Wow Dog Treats said the brand's products are 'developed in consultation with scientists and animal nutrition experts' and said treats like the Prosciutto Bone 'can support dental and joint health' in dogs. 'We adhere to all recommended industry guidelines, and necessary disclosures are clearly stated on our packaging.' \The Australian pet food industry is largely unregulated despite a 2018 senate inquiry where those involved in the sector called for government oversight to better protect the almost 29 million pets in the country. The Pet Food Industry Association of Australia (PFIAA) has been advocating for pet food regulations and a better system to manage consumer complaints for years, but little action has been taken. Vets who suspect an animal has suffered health issues linked to pet food can make a report through PetFAST, a non-government alert system developed by PFIAA and the Australian Veterinary Association. After an incident is reported, PFIAA can request the pet food manufacturer open an investigation but the lack of regulations means the manufacturer does not need to comply. There is also no avenue to mandate a recall of a product reported through PetFAST, even when it has been reported multiple times
