Before entering parliament, Mr Barilaro managed a family business manufacturing window and door fittings in his home town of Queanbeyan in regional NSW. He left the business, called Ryleho, upon taking office in 2012. It was placed into voluntary administration in 2019. Mr Barilaro was not a director.
The dossier revealed how Mr Barilaro was selected for the role over international marketing executive and finalist for Telstra Businesswoman of the Year Kimberley Cole, who in one email was listed as the preferred candidate.Supplied/SMH Other documents compiled after Mr Barilaro’s appointment had been finalised internally show a department steeling itself for strident questioning on its appointments.The talking points provided to Mr Ayres included a lengthy list of former MPs who were given trade positions by the federal government, in an apparent effort to build a case to defend questions on the appointment.
