The double demerit period will run over Christmas and New Year’s Day and will apply from 12.01am on December 20 until 11.59pm on January 1.
The higher penalties mean if you are caught using your phone behind the wheel this holiday period you’ll cop 10 demerit points along with a $344 fine. Motorcyclists caught riding without a helmet will cop a $344 fine and six demerit points, which can jump up to a $1791 fine and 18 demerit points if they are caught carrying multiple unhelmeted passengers.
