Twins have long been a fascination for psychologists and storytellers; a recent spate of TV shows has imaginatively mined the 'same game'.
Our stories are full of them: whether they’re identical twins or unrelated doubles, they might look alike but they’re essentially different. From ancient mythologies to contemporary TV streaming services, they’ve been a source of fascination for psychologists and storytellers.
Mark Ruffalo plays troubled brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdseye in the intense psychological drama I Know This Much Is True.Significantly, neither of the brothers is a villain. This is not that kind of story. Thomas suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and carries the weight of the world on his stooped shoulders. Dominick is his self-appointed carer with an ostensibly firmer grasp of reality, but he has troubles of his own which gradually come into clearer focus.
But it’s method actor Ruffalo’s bravura contribution for which the series is likely to be remembered . His is another of those performances that pivot on physical transformation undergone for the sake of art. Apparently he lost 10 kilograms from his regular weight to play Dominick, then gained 15 during a six-week break in order to play Thomas. Such is the contrast between the two characters that it’s often difficult to see them as brothers, let alone identical twins.
