Former Downer EDI engineer Sairam Pilli has testified before a NSW corruption inquiry that he accepted more than $100,000 from a private company, RJS Infrastructure, after helping it inflate the cost of a train station project.
RJS Infrastructure ended up making $529,000 in profit on the train project after the value of its initial contract more than doubled to more than $800,000.Mr Pilli said in evidence that Transport for NSW project manager Nima Abdi had offered him a one-third share of the profits in return for providing assistance.with former Inner West Council project engineer Tony Nguyen, and met Mr Pilli on the Kingswood project.
Mr Pilli told ICAC that he didn’t tell anyone at Downer about Mr Abdi’s cash offer because of his previous interactions with the company. Some of the cash was used to pay off credit card debt and everyday items such as food and fuel, and some was donated to charities including farmers’ bushfire relief as well as purchasing about 250 kilograms of rice for people who couldn’t feed themselves, Mr Pilli said. After the Kingswood station project was completed in early 2020, and RJS Infrastructure had been paid, Mr Pilli said he discussed splitting the remaining profits with Mr Abdi.
