NSW Police strip-searched children, including 12 and 13-year-olds, in the four months after the Minns government promised to review the practice, an FOI has revealed.
More than two dozen children including a 12-year-old were strip-searched by NSW Police in the four months after the Minns government committed to review the practice.
“The trauma can be long-lasting,” Lee said. “I’ve taken instruction from clients years later who are very traumatised. A common scenario is that they start to cry, they seem shaky, and they are scared about reporting it even now.” The figures also suggest police are disproportionately searching Aboriginal children. Seven of the 26 children were Aboriginal, a rate of more than one in four. The 2021 census shows only one in 16 children in NSW is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.Redfern Legal Centre has also analysed long-term data on police strip-searches of children, also obtained under FOI, for a seven-year period up to June last year.
