Premier Chris Minns and Treasurer Daniel Mookhey say 14 cents out of every dollar paid by a NSW person in GST is now being donated to other states, including Victoria.

NSW Premier Chris Minns is demanding a full explanation from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about why the country’s largest state was punished in the latest GST carve-up.

“I think the taxpayers of NSW need to understand why we’re currently in a situation where so much money has been withdrawn from Australia’s largest state and instead sent down to Victoria.“I just want to make a really simple request to the prime minister and the treasurer. Is this accidental or is it deliberate?”

The grants commission advises the federal government how the GST should be split using a complex formula that aims to give each state the opportunity to provide residents with a comparable level of services. Mookhey described the system for allocating the GST as “absurd”, said it “cannot last” and on Wednesday he conceded it will now be “virtually impossible” for the state’s budget to return to surplus next year.
