As many as 40 firefighters are on scene at the blaze on Abercrombie Street in Darlington.
It's understood that the building is a residential apartment complex with a cafe on the bottom level.Residents have been evacuated. One northbound lane has been closed on Gibbons Street. Lawson Road has also been closed as firefighters continue to fight the blaze.The fire will not impact any train lines or rail operations at nearby Redfern Station.
