St George Illawarra have appointed Anthony Griffin as coach for the next two seasons, negotiating an option in the club's favour for a third season should the appointment prove fruitful.
Griffin received unanimous support from the board to be handed the job, the first since his sudden and acrimonious exit from the Penrith Panthers in 2018.. The Dragons identified Sydney Roosters assistant coach Craig Fitzgibbon, who still lives in the Illawarra, as their primary target however Fitzgibbon recently knocked back the three-year offer to remain with the Tricolours until at least the end of 2021.
"The board of directors were unanimous in their decision on Monday afternoon in appointing Anthony ahead of the other candidates. Anthony has missed finals football only once which speaks to the strong discipline and ability to develop young talent of which he has exhibited both throughout his career.
