Johnson Kokozian has faced court after allegedly fleeing when he crashed his Mercedes into the Toyota Echo carrying Alina Angel Kauffman and her brother Ernesto Salazar.
A man who allegedly killed two siblings in a head-on crash while driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit in Sydney’s south-west on Friday night has had his charges upgraded.
Johnson Kokozian, 20, faced Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday morning after allegedly fleeing when he crashed his Mercedes into the Toyota Echo carrying Alina Angel Kauffman, 24, and her brother Ernesto Salazar, 15.The pair were just 200 metres from their Heckenberg home after Kauffman had picked up her brother from his new job at Kmart.
Police initially accused Kokozian of two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, but those charges were upgraded to aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death due to the alleged excessive speed.He was also charged with driving in a dangerous manner, negligent driving occasioning death, two counts of failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, as well as driving while disqualified. He was denied bail.
Witnesses took mobile phone footage of what appeared to be three people climbing out of the Mercedes and fled in a fourth vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf, leaving the woman and her brother critically injured in the wreck. The occupants of the RAV4 were not hurt.Speaking on Saturday, the siblings’ mother Angelina sobbed as she said her children were “beautiful” and had wanted to help people.Friend Alana Sisifa started a fundraiser for the family, which has reached $36,000 in just three days.
