A suspected drug run in Sydney went awry when a Mercedes 4WD ran out of petrol, leading to a high-speed chase and eventual arrests.
A suspected New Year's Eve drug run came unstuck after a Mercedes 4WD ran out of petrol in the middle of the street in Sydney 's Inner West. The wild adventure for highway patrol officers began when they came across the broken-down Mercedes stopped on the Cooks River Bridge in Tempe on Tuesday evening. Two men remained in the car, while two others had walked to the service station to fill a jerry can with petrol. NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Command recounted.
After returning with fuel, the 18-year-old driver offered to move the car off the roadway. The Mercedes allegedly reached speeds of up to 120km/h as the highway patrol officers began their pursuit. The 4WD crashed into a car stopped at a traffic light on Railway Road and then allegedly ran the red light. After stopping their pursuit to check on the occupants of the car, police caught up with the fleeing Mercedes on Sydney Park Road in Erskineville. 'The disabled passenger was found to have no less than eight clear resealable zip lock bags in his underwear containing cocaine along with a sum of cash in his backpack,' NSW Police. The driver is alleged to have returned a positive drug test to cocaine and was also found to be a learner driver who was refused his licence due to demerit points. The disabled passenger was taken to hospital before being released and charged with supplying drugs and dealing with the proceeds of a crime
