David Lynch's 1984 movie was flawed in a number of major ways. However, the adaptation did get one crucial design element absolutely perfect.

David Lynch's 1984 Dune is recognized as an ambitious but incredibly flawed adaptation, but Denis Villeneuve's 2021 version of the Frank Herbert classic proves that the original movie did get one element exactly right. Lynch's movie is a bizarre, often surreal condensation of the original novel. Unlike Villeneuve's movie – which is deliberately split into two parts – Lynch tried to compress Herbert's complex world-building into one two-hour feature.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY There were many ways in which David Lynch's Dune failed to do justice to the original novel. For one thing, the severely limited runtime meant that Herbert's intricately layered universe, as well as Arrakis' incredibly rich fantasy culture, were glossed over in an attempt to keep the plot moving forwards. Equally, technology in 1984 severely limited the way in which certain scenes could be brought to the big screen.

Lynch's Dune featured a number of eccentric design decisions, including Police singer Sting's notorious winged underwear. As such, Villeneuve took a very different aesthetic approach. However, despite the many stylistic contrasts between the two Dune movies, it's telling that the stillsuits look remarkably similar. Both feature a worn, lived-in leather appearance, in contrast to many of Lynch's other extravagant choices.

Why Lynch's Stillsuit Design Couldn't Save Dune 1984 While Lynch's stillsuits effectively brought Herbert's vision to life, there were ultimately too many other issues with the movie. Although the director's design choices were often strange, Dune's distinctive and influential aesthetic is actually not the film's biggest flaw. Rather, it's the combination of narrative compromise and post-production studio interference that led to the project's failure.

Lynch's final intended version of Dune ran to around three hours in length. This, however, was at serious odds with producer Dino de Laurentiis, who expected a two-hour cut in line with most feature releases of the day. The subsequent compromises meant radical changes to the story and cutting out key exposition. As a result, the final version of David Lynch's Dune was labeled by many as unintelligible and strangely paced.
