By taking a hard line against key government policies, the opposition leader is hoping to make life as hard as possible for Labor in the Senate.
During the dark days of Labor’s civil war between Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd, it was Anthony Albanese, in his role as leader of the House, who largely held the show together when parliament sat.
Memories of the vuvuzela horn were rekindled his week when parliament resumed and the opposition turned up, clearly in a combative mood. The Coalition this week also confirmed it would continue the climate wars by voting against the safeguard mechanism, which is a beefed-up version of its own policy to reduce industrial emissions and help achieve Labor’s legislated 43 per cent reduction by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050., refusing even to support the enabling legislation unless the government commits to public funding for the Yes and No cases.
On climate change at least, there are a few in the Coalition wondering the same thing. At what stage will Dutton dip his lid to the voters in the progressive seats whoThe novelty has worn off the teal independents as parliament gets down to tin tacks, and all that matters is numbers in the Senate. The lower house teals don’t count. But their seats, and other Liberal seats such as Boothby that were lost to Labor, still need to be won back.
Conversely, after the forced profligacy of the pandemic response, Dutton is conscious of the need to reassert the Liberal Party’s conservative credentials, more so given the pressure from the party’s base.Conservatism explains the decision to oppose the off-budget funds.
