Coalition MPs have suggested Jacinta Nampijinpa Price could be a future leader of the Nationals, after she drove the No campaign’s defeat of the Voice to parliament.
Asked if Price had the leadership qualities needed to lead the Nationals one day, Pitt said: “Absolutely, there is no doubt about that whatsoever.” Liberal National Queensland MP Phillip Thompson, a friend of Price’s, said she had stood up against people in inner-city seats telling the Nationals what to do.
Price did not directly respond to her colleagues’ praise and instead stressed she was grateful for their support during the referendum campaign. If Price was to seek the Nationals’ leadership, a position current leader David Littleproud has given no indication he plans to vacate, there is no rule that she would have to be in the lower house, nor would she need to be in the lower house to be deputy prime minister.
