A violent attack on a Perth grandmother allegedly at the hands of a released immigration detainee has raised concerns about assurances from the government that the community would be safe.
A violent attack on a Perth grandmother has sparked renewed questions over Labor’s handling of the immigration detainee scandal.
The incident sparked renewed attack from the Opposition, demanding the “missing in action” Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles front up to apologise to the public. He questioned why the government did not oppose Mr Doukoshkan’s bail when he went before the court for a separate incident in February.
Speaking with the ABC, Industry Minister Ed Husic said he was “deeply concerned” by the attack and indicated the government would “have more to say”. But the frontbencher said he was not interested in turning the attack into a political football. Preventive detention laws that would allow individuals to be held for up to three years at a time if they are deemed by a court to be an unacceptable risk to the community were also passed.
But Mr Dutton denied the delay and put any of the responsibility back on the Coalition, arguing they’d pushed Labor to strengthen their position on the initial patch up laws last year.
