There are calls for legislative change as the inquest into the 2019 Corrective Services shooting death of Wiradjuri man Dwayne Johnstone ends with the coroner to hand down her findings and recommendations in late August.

Dwayne Johnstone was wearing handcuffs and shackles when he was fatally shot while trying to escape from Corrective Services officers. The partner of a man shot dead as he tried to flee the custody of Corrective Services officers has described the "devastating emptiness" of no longer having him by her side.

Ms Pepper said her interaction with authorities had been "a circus" since the moment she was told of Mr Johnstone's death."I hope another family never has to endure the pain we have gone through." Mr Johnstone's mother Kerry Crawford-Shanahan said it was good her son's death had already led to change, and she was confident more would be done by legislators."I know they are going to work their hardest so that no-one ever has to ever go through this again," she said.

Evidence from Corrective Services officers detailed changes that had already been made since Mr Johnstone's death.
