'The knackery bought very few. He didn't get many at all - I think he only got half a dozen realistically,'

Fears dozens of horses would have to be euthanised have been averted, after every horse at Echuca's sales found a buyer.

But every one of the close-to-200 horses was snapped up on Friday, with the pre-sale publicity causing unprecedented interest. Just six have ended up in the hands of abattoirs, none of them thoroughbreds.on Friday afternoon. "There were nearly 200 [horses] here. We registered 300 people [as buyers], a lot more than we normally would, a lot of new faces, and they came and they bought and they were excited."[The publicity] was fantastic, greatest thing ever.

The four-year-old Strategic Maneuver mare, named Zargood, sold for $1900. The other eight thoroughbreds put up for sale were bought by equestrian riders, with the cheapest selling for $450.
