A proposed eco-resort development in Purnululu National Park, Western Australia, has ignited tensions between traditional owners. The WA government announced a deal with global tourism company Abercrombie & Kent to build a 16-room boutique hotel within the world heritage-listed area. While the Billingjul Aboriginal Corporation (BAC), granted a 'living area lease' in the park, sees the project as a boon for jobs and cultural sharing, the Bungle Bungles Aboriginal Corporation (BBAC), representing a wider group of traditional owners, expresses concern about the lack of consultation and potential limited benefits for the community.
A WA government-brokered deal will enable a global tourism company to build an eco-resort in Purnululu National Park.Tensions between traditional owners of Purnululu National Park in Western Australia's Kimberley have been revived by news a luxury hotel is proposed for the world heritage-listed area.
The 16-room eco-lodge would be located close to the famous sandstone domes on a special lease granted to the family-run Billingjul Aboriginal Corporation ."We want it for jobs for our people ... cooks, tour guides ... and to be sharing with visitors to the park about how we lived on the land," the 72-year-old said. Her family's corporation, which has 15 members, was granted a "living area lease" in the national park in 2023.
"We didn't realise an international company and the West Australian government and Tourism WA were going to be endorsing something for Bonnie ; that's so huge," he said."I can't see it benefiting the wider community. It's going to potentially provide for a small handful of people."Ms Edwards confirmed the venture was BAC's initiative and other native title holders and the wider BBAC would not benefit.
