Labor has attempted to shift $16 billion of debt from university students and onto taxpayers with the controversial policy set to become a key election issue.

The Albanese government has been branded as"populist" after it announced an election promise to shift $16 billion of student debt from elite university students onto working class taxpayers.

Ms Hume said the debt forgiveness policy was “populist” and “economically irresponsible” at a time working class Australians who never went to university were facing a severe cost of living crisis. While the debt forgiveness scheme will include VET Student Loans , the average VSL value is about $8,970 – less than half the average HELP debt of $27,600.

Mr Littleproud argued the government’s approach lacked fairness and accountability, insisting that taxpayer money should be spent more equitably. “This is what Anthony Albanese started—a political pitch for the next election... to have a closing down sale,” Mr Littleproud said.
