National cabinet noted the federal government would make a decision “proportionate” to the current health information on Omicron, clearing the way for Mr Morrison to end the pause. Government sources said the plan was to resume the intake of about 200,000 workers and students from December 15.
Mr Frydenberg said it would show a return to strong economic growth next year after a “bounce-back” in the final three months of this year, with a big recovery in spending by employers. Mr Frydenberg said the government had spent $300 billion during the pandemic – almost one-third of that on the JobKeeper wage subsidy – but expected business investment to fill the gap when the surge of public spending had to end.
“The Australian economy is in a better position than nearly any other economy in the world and is primed for lift-off next year. “Insecure work in this country has a number of sources and it’s why we’ve got a policy for labour hire, for example, so that people who are doing the same job get the same pay,” Labor treasury spokesman Jim Chalmers said this week.
