Back to the prime minister, and Scott Morrison has twice this morning pointed out that yesterday’s inflation figures don’t include the effect of the fuel excise cut in stemming price increases.
Morrison also cited the 0.5 percentage point cut to inflation during an earlier interview on Sky News.“The fuel excise reduction is expected to reduce headline inflation by a quarter of a percentage point in the June quarter of 2022,” the budget papers state. “I’m happy to do two debates next week. Seven and Nine have both offered me debates next week. I’m happy to do both of them,” the PM said.10.00amVictoria’s official coronavirus numbers are also in.
Asked whether he sees a reflection of the 2007 election rate rise in the current situation, Morrison said drawing an equivalence between then and now “is to misunderstand history”.“We are in the middle of a pandemic with a war in Europe. Those situations were not in place in 2007,” he said. He then returned to his preferred topic of economic management, saying talk of preferences and how-to-vote cards is “just all politics”.Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has declined to respond to revelations by this masthead that he was secretly grilled by Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog, something which could have implications for federal Labor MPs.
In all of the interviews, the PM emphasised that he understood the cost-of-living pressures Australians are feeling – now made official through those inflation figures we saw yesterday – and said his government was on top of it with the budget measures. “But our ship is sailing ahead and it’s heading in the right direction and now is not the time to risk that on unproven sailors.”Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews is due to address the media around 9am AEST.
