Anyone who isn't automatically eligible is able to claim by post and can now do so by phone from today (October 4).
The Department for Work and Pensions will pay £600 directly into the bank accounts of those who are eligible.
Winter Fuel Payments are worth between £100 and £300 with a cost of living payment of £150 or £300 added on top, the total will be between £250 and £600, depending on age and circumstances. Anyone who is eligible should receive a letter this month or next informing them of the news.The money is aimed at those who are state pension age and the criteria for this year is being born before September 1957.
Payments cannot be made into a National Savings and Investments account unless you already get other benefits paid into the account. The DWP will also need to know if during the qualifying week of September 18 to 24, 2023, you were in hospital getting free in-patient treatment, in a residential care home or Ilford Park Resettlement Home, or in prison.The amount you get is based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 18 to 24, 2023. This is called the qualifying week.
