Listen to “Finding Dodienne” by composer Marcelo Zarvos in advance of the release of Emancipation's soundtrack, exclusively on Screen Rant:
Antoine Fuqua's latest film Emancipation is out in theaters, but it will reach new audiences when it releases on Apple TV+ on Friday. The film is inspired by the story of "Whipped Peter," an enslaved man who went on to be a part of the Union Army during the Civil War. Peter escaped slavery and found his way to a Union encampment, where a photo taken was of his heavily-scarred back—the result of heavy abuse at the hands of those he escaped.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Emancipation looks to be full of powerful imagery and performances, but the film's story is also given life by a stirring score composed by Marcelo Zarvos. Zarvos is a prolific composer with a number of well-known projects under his belt, including Fences and The Guilty, and he has even collaborated with Antoine Fuqua in the past on the HBO documentary What's My Name: Muhammad Ali.
Listen to Emancipation - Soundtrack From The Apple Original Film on December 9th "Finding Dodienne" is just one of the twenty-two tracks that comprise the upcoming soundtrack album of Zarvos' music for Emancipation. The score itself is a wide-ranging effort that often takes center stage in the film to great effect. In addition to an orchestra, Zarvos incorporated choirs and traditional African instruments to more accurately touch on the scope of the story of Peter's life.
The score evolves from the primal, violent sounds of the first two acts into a more orchestral sound in the third act, tracking Peter’s journey from enslaved man running for his life to brave soldier who will stop at nothing to be reunited with his family."01.
