At 7.10am, temperatures had already reached 26.8 degrees in Melbourne and 28.2 degrees in Mildura. By 1pm, the temperature in the city had climbed to 35 degrees. Damaging winds are also forecast, with a 130km/h gust recorded at Mount Gellibrand, between Colac and Winchelsea, at 11.35am.for Melbourne, with Avalon Airport recording a wind gust of 122 km/h about 2.20pm.
At Monday’s press conference, the meteorologist warned that less rain over the past couple of weeks had dried out grasslands across the state. West Wimmera Mayor Tim Meyer told 3AW on Tuesday morning that schools and kindergartens had shut, which annoyed some residents.
