An endangered tortoise that excited wildlife carers by surviving outside its only known habitats in Perth has returned home to its birthplace and site of a relocation trial in WA's South West.

While the released tortoise is still too young to breed, Ms Hewitt said she hoped if there were more animals out there they would find each other when they were ready. "Hopefully, as they do trapping in the future to see how they're all going … maybe they'll decide to bring more down. "All the information will feed into our understanding of the likelihood of populations being established in cooler climates on the south coast of Western Australian.
