The dusky sea snake has slithered into Woodside Energy’s $30 billion Browse Basin gas project equation as Australia hurtles towards becoming a gas importer despite its huge repositories.

Woodside 's $30bn gas project off WA coast not in jeopardy over endangered sea snake, Tanya Plibersek says as Australia is set to become an importer of the resource

However, the resource giant told SkyNews.com.au it had already conducted an assessment on “all listed species in the area” – which included the dusky sea snake. “No physical contact to Scott Reef is expected, this being the area which incorporates the reef habitats preferred by sea snakes.” “Particularly in relation to regulation of the local fossil fuel industry and other activities that are driving climate change,” the conservation advice continued.

Shadow environment minister Jonathon Duniam told SkyNews.com.au the project would be “incredibly important” for the Australian economy and would bring more supply to the energy market “when we need it most”.
