. It was 1997, and I was about halfway through a two-year stint living in America, when I was sent a copy of Paul Kelly’s greatest hits to review. The album featured an obscure track calledWhile I was having a great time in the States, when I heard Kelly’s squeaky door of a voice and his story of an Aussie Christmas, it stirred up some serious homesickness within me. And that was just the impact of– all of those Kelly songs nearly had me booking a flight home.
It’s been covered by James Reyne, Christine Anu and others. And it seems that barely a day of December goes by without me hearing it played on the radio. Paul Kelly has turned what he admits was a song never destined to be a hit into a cottage industry.syndrome a little more closely.
