Man Utd were outclassed by Brighton at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag has a mounting list of problems to deal with early in the season.
"Can we play you every week?" was the request from the jubilant away end as Brighton inflicted another miserable day on Manchester United. Seats were being vacated around the rest of Old Trafford, supporters voting with their feet with their side 3-0 down at home.
The jeers that accompanied the decision to withdraw Rasmus Hojlund betrayed the feelings of United's matchgoing fans, who will know they are seeing a pale imitation of the side they took to their hearts last season. Too open at the back, too wasteful in attack, too easy to play against. Given all the off-pitch travails engulfing the club, there might have been an enthusiasm to get back to the football, but Brighton are one of the last teams you want to play when things haven't quite been working and confidence is a little fragile. So it proved. The Seagulls soared, their 3-1 victory the fourth successive time they've beaten United in the league.
The first goal came when Eriksen didn't get to Joel Veltman in time and his incisive pass to Danny Welbeck opened the game up. After the break, it was Tariq Lamptey who created the goals. McTominay and Diogo Dalot were too casual on the right and Lamptey had time to play a pass into the area. It wasn't aimed for Pascal Gross, but the fact he reacted quicker than every United defender summed up the difference between the two teams.
Right now, you couldn't say the same of United. This is now 10 goals conceded in four games and they are allowing the opposition far too many chances in games. They will continue to lose matches if they don't tighten up.
