A touching tribute awaits on Rod Laver Arena tonight as the late Esna Boyd is welcomed into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame. Boyd, who passed away in 1966 at the age of 67, achieved remarkable success on the court, capturing eight Australian titles, including one singles crown and seven doubles championships. Notably, she participated in the first Australasian women's final in 1922, marking a significant milestone in Australian tennis history.
Three of Boyd's granddaughters have traveled from the United Kingdom to participate in the centre court ceremony, which will take place before the 7pm singles match between Aryna Sabalenka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. A bronze bust of Boyd, expertly crafted by Melbourne sculptor Barbara McLean, will be unveiled in Melbourne Park's Garden Square, a permanent testament to her legacy.Known for her powerful forehand and vibrant personality, Boyd played a pivotal role in propelling the growth of women's tennis in Australia. As a member of the first Australian women's team to embark on an overseas tour in 1925, she gained international recognition and claimed multiple titles in various states, including Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia. 'We have always known and cherished her memory, and now her fame and achievements have exploded,' granddaughter Vicki Weinand shared. 'It is really exciting and a privilege for three members of the family to be part of this.
