Club great and board member Simon Madden confirmed on Wednesday that he resigned from the Bombers board on Monday morning.

At 34, Campbell became the youngest chief executive of the Essendon Football Club in the club’s history, having taking over at the beginning of 2014.Campbell held a meeting with Essendon staff on Wednesday morning. He had been contemplating the decision for some time, and informed Barham over the weekend. The club’s chief commercial officer Nick Ryan will act as interim chief executive, as the Bombers search for Campbell’s replacement.

Campbell has been aligned with Brasher, having worked behind the scenes for Brasher to take over as president when previous chairman Lindsay Tanner stepped down., who joined the Dons before the 2021 season. Within a fortnight, Essendon have now turned over the three biggest leadership positions in the organisation withEssendon great Simon Madden has resigned from the board.In a club statement released on Wednesday morning, Campbell said the time was right to depart, having steered the club through the aftermath of the damaging drugs scandal, and that the club needed to be united under its new president.

“I have done everything in my power to restore the club’s financial, structural, and cultural stability; to help pick up the pieces and put the club back together after the heartbreak, chaos, and instability of my first four years was one of the more difficult tasks I will face in my professional career. And despite the challenges of this past week – I believe we have done that.
