Eugene Wang calls them his “cancer journeys”

Son to a hard-working single mother, he spent much of his childhood in the care of his grandparents, the family of four living together in a neat orange brick townhouse in East Malvern.

But both of them contracted cancer when Eugene was in high school, throwing family life into turmoil.One cancer journey ended in grief when his grandmother Kun Shi died of pancreatic cancer two years ago, as Eugene neared the end of year 10.He sat his first VCE exam, for Chinese as a Second Language, soon after, while his family was still mourning Kun Shi’s death.

“I do want to specialise in oncology in the future and the biggest factor is my personal experiences,” Eugene says.
