Dan Adams, co-founder of Amber, Nankivell’s retailer, says the 3 million EVs the energy market operator expects to be on Australian roads by 2030 would have about 21,000 megawatts of battery capacity – more than the 18,000MW of distributed battery storage the agency says will be needed by then. They could save their owners $6 billion a year in total if they all discharged into the grid, Adams says.
Commonwealth Bank-backed Amber is unusual in giving its customers access to wholesale prices – subject to a quarterly cap set “slightly above” typical retail bills – in each state., but customers with solar panels and batteries made hundreds of dollars a day for a few days, Adams says.Customers set the terms, such as the minimum battery or EV capacity they want to start the next day.
One obstacle is that so far, 86 per cent of households with home batteries – consultancy Sunwiz estimates there are about 230,000 – have chosen not to join so-called virtual power plants. “There’s going to be 5 million batteries and EVs by 2030,” he says. “If you want to unlock that battery and EV capacity you need to do it in a way that actually works for the end consumer.”
