Scotland's got a word for that awkward moment when you forget someone's name.
According to the Urban Dictionary, it's the feeling that medieval peasants had when the castle gates were closing ahead of an attack by enemies. So, a feeling most modern people would know well. The German word literally translates to"gate-shut panic". Mr Astle says torschlusspanik is more like the feeling that a moment has passed or time is running out. It's often used in relation to a life goal or opportunity, and it's not a joyous feeling.
A few of us might appreciate the term pyt Mr Astle says it's the feeling of going with the flow, even when faced with a minor irritation The closest word for it that we would use is the term"no worries". The Danish word, pronounced pyd, is apparently used effectively with children as a way of saying"winning isn't everything". Mr Astle says they even have a pyt button inside Danish classrooms.
