Exploring airway-to-brain sensory pathways in influenza-induced illness SensoryPathways Influenza InfluenzaInducedIllness natureportfolio harvardmed
By Bhavana KunkalikarMar 13 2023Reviewed by Aimee Molineux In a recent study published in Nature, researchers assessed the role of the airway-to-brain sensory pathways in influenza-induced illness.
About the study In the present study, researchers identified a population of glossopharyngeal sensory neurons that detect PGE2 and are crucial for influenza-induced sickness in mice. The team employed genetic mapping techniques to identify the central and peripheral projections of gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-1 neurons. To observe the global nodose–jugular–petrosal projection field, NJP ganglia of Gabra1-internal ribosome entry site -cre animals were injected with an adeno-associated virus having a Cre-dependent reporter gene producing tdTomato or alkaline phosphatase, or an AAV having a Cre-independent reporter gene encoding a green fluorescent protein .
In addition, the team detected a hypothermic response to influenza infection, which is consistent with prior findings in mice. Ibuprofen or aspirin administration to influenza-infected mice lowered plasma PGE2 levels, restored eating, water consumption, and body weight, and increased infection survival.
