The business sector and unions have united to oppose the Andrews government’s overhauled WorkSafe compensation scheme which will hike premiums and cut extended benefits for people stressed or burnt out.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Paul Guerra said businesses could not afford the extra tax, while Trades Hall secretary Luke Hilakari said stress and burnout should not be excluded.

“We want to see injured workers get back to work as fast as possible. But we think denying workers access to this scheme is the wrong way to go,” Hilakari said.Credit:“This scheme does need real reform. We cannot afford to see this scheme fall over. There’s just too many workers that rely on it.” “This is a balanced package. I’m sure some will say it goes too far, others will say it doesn’t go far enough. That normally give you a sense that you have found a point of balance. We’ve got to make sure that WorkCover is there for the future.”

“I think injured workers deserve better ... It’s about having those early interventions, trying to find pathways to try and stop small problems from becoming bigger problems.”
